Various scholars of political science hold diverse views about the concept of soft power, and the use thereof. But for an American Scholar, Joseph Nye, the definition of soft power focuses on, amongst others, the power of “influence.”
His definition seems to find more resonance with South Africa’s diplomatic practice. He defines soft power as a country’s ability to influence events through persuasion and attraction, rather than military or financial coercion. He believes that a country has more soft power if its culture, values and institutions incite admiration and respect in other parts of the world. Read full article.

Importers donate citrus to The Bowery Mission
The growers of South Africa Summer Citrus joined with the United Nations, Permanent Mission of South Africa to the United Nations and the South African Consulate General of New York to celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day, on 18 July 2013, Nelson Mandela’s birthday.
The growers and importers were joined by members of the South Africa Consulate to offload the fruit at the Mission. UN Commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day

In 2009, South Africa initiated and led a process that saw the United Nations General Assembly designating 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day. It was decided that the General Assembly will annually observe this day in a special session. This year also marks the 50th Anniversary of the Rivonia Trial – a seminal event in South Africa’s liberation. H.E. President Jacob Zuma has invited struggle veteran Mr. Andrew Mlangeni, a comrade, compatriot and fellow Rivonia trialist of former President Mandela to represent the Government of South Africa at the special sitting of the General Assembly as the keynote speaker. The Programme speakers include the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr Ban Ki-moon, the President of the General Assembly, Mr. Vuk Jeremic, former President of the United States, Mr. Bill Clinton, and legendary musician, Mr. Henry Belafonte.
This year’s commemoration of the International Mandela Day takes on a particular significance in the count-down to South Africa’s 20th Anniversary of liberation. The best way to celebrate Madiba’s life is to observe the ideals his life encapsulate: freedom, democracy and dignity for all. Madiba’s leadership transcended all human boundaries, whether based on race, clan, ethnicity or religion.

On 18 July 2013, Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday, a coalition of Boston‐based community organizations, elected officials, and activists will host a celebration of Mandela’s life at the Old South Church at 645 Boylston Street in Copley Square at 5:30 PM. The celebration includes special guest speakers Governor Deval Patrick, Mayor Thomas M. Menino, a US South African Embassy representative, and Groton School Headmaster Temba Maqubela among others, Mandela’s inspirational words read by local youth, and musical tributes. Former President Nelson Mandela’s condition remains unchanged in hospital and doctors continue to do their best to ensure his recovery, well-being and comfort.
President Zuma thanks the South African public for ongoing support and understanding.
“We must support him and support his family. We must demonstrate our love and appreciation for his leadership during the struggle for liberation and in our first few years of freedom and democracy by living out his legacy and promoting unity, non-racialism, non-sexism and prosperity in our country”, said President Zuma.
Former President Mandela will turn 95 on the 18th of July. “We must all be planning what to do next month in marking our 67 minutes of doing good for humanity as called upon by Madiba to do so, when he launched the International Mandela Day campaign. Let us make it the biggest Mandela Day ever on the 18th of July, focusing on doing good all over the country’’, said President Zuma.
President Zuma also urged that Madiba and his family be accorded the necessary sensitivity, dignity and privacy at this time.

Following the success of Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations in London’s Hyde Park in June 2008, it was decided that there could be nothing more fitting than to celebrate Mr. Mandela’s birthday each year with a day dedicated to his life’s work and that of his charitable organizations, and to ensure his legacy continues forever.
