CINEMATOSCAPE is proud to produce “The Space Between” stage play for United Solo in New York City. “The Space Between” is a coming of age story told through a historical and cross cultural lens. A young boy in South Africa longs to reunite with his American childhood sweetheart before the space between them separates them forever. Inspired by actual events, the play explores the universal themes of ‘distance' and ‘space'.
“The Space Between” play is written and performed by Simeon Taole, who has been called “an up and coming bona fide triple threat” (NOW Magazine) and one of the “best kept secrets within the arts and cultural scene” (North York Arts). Taole “proved himself to be an exceptional playwright, director, actor, filmmaker, and composer in less than an hour and half” (MOONEY ON THEATRE).
Taole has taken the show on tour 2016/17, and won “Best Performer” at the Atlantic Fringe Festival 2016. In review of this performance, THE COAST noted “I couldn’t take my eyes off Taole. He’s an astonishing actor; with small shifts in tone, accent and posture he can immediately create a whole new character”. Called a “Tour De Force Performance” (TWISI), this production also incorporates original music in a heartfelt and humorous show.

Adapted from Mbongeni Ngema's Broadway production of Asinamali. On the prison yard, a man named Nelson Mandela told Msizi Dube "Go and do it for all of us, for all our people. So one day we may join you in a free South Africa." After Msizi Dube was released residents of Lamontville Township, with anger and passion in their hearts, demonstrated against proposed rent increases, and led the crowds with a cry of ASINAMALI - We have no money. Dube was later gunned down but his cause and mission had touched the hearts of millions who still believe and follow in what he said. Our story takes place, ten years later in a prison, where a group of inmates are asked to create and perform a stage play for the governor and his associates for a celebration at the prison. These seven inmates, crammed together in a small cell, use their free time at night, after a hard days work, creating the stage play as a way of escaping the reality of where they are.

South Africa commemorates Womens Month in August
On 9 August 1956, about 20,000 women of all races marched to the Union Buildings to protest against the discriminatory pass laws which had restricted the movement of black people in the country. This march has been celebrated since 1995 as Women’s Day, to recognize the important and significant role that political activism by women played during the struggle for liberation against colonization and apartheid. This year’s celebration coincides with the centenary of struggle icon OR Tambo and will be commemorated under the theme: “The Year of OR Tambo: Women United in Moving South Africa Forward”.
During the Month of August, a number of activities aimed at creating awareness and promoting understanding of women issues will be held throughout the country.

Nelson Mandela International Day volunteers helped sort donations received by Housing Works.
Housing Works is a New York City based non-profit fighting the twin crises of AIDS and homelessness. In 1990, five members of the famous AIDS activist group ACT UP—Keith Cylar, Charles King, Gerri Wells, Eric Sawyer and Virginia Shubert—decided to dedicate themselves to serving one of New York City’s most neglected populations: the tens of thousands of homeless men, women, and children in New York City living with HIV and AIDS. The activists called their new group Housing Works because they believed that stable housing was the key to helping HIV-positive people live healthy and fulfilling lives and to prevent the further spread of the virus. The charity is well known for its operations, which have recently included outreach to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.

June is Youth Month
June is celebrated as Youth Month in South Africa, with a specific focus on 16 June, which is also known as Youth Day. Youth Month pays tribute to the school pupils who lost their lives during the 16 June 1976 uprising in Soweto.
This year marks the 41st anniversary of the Soweto uprisings.
On 16 June 1976, more than 15,000 students gathered at Orlando West Secondary School with the intention of participating in a peaceful march to the nearby Orlando Stadium.
The demonstration had been planned in protest against the use of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction at schools.
However, the police and armed forces responded to the protest violently and the first fatality of the day was Hector Pieterson, a 12 year old pupil who was shot by the police. It is believed that 175 others were also killed that day.
This violent backlash to what was meant to be a peaceful march caught the attention of the international community. After this event, many countries imposed sanctions on South Africa in an attempt to force the apartheid government to ease its repressive rule.

In May, the New York African Film Festival returns to the Film Society of Lincoln Center, Maysles Cinema and Brooklyn Academy of Music for its 24th edition. A special program will take place at Lehman College on 10 May, in collaboration with the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment's One Book, One New York program.
This year, the flagship festival takes on the theme, The Peoples’ Revolution, to illuminate the swell of creatives throughout Africa and its diaspora seeking reform and taking the artistic and sociopolitical actions to do so.

Abdullah Ibrahim welcomes special guest musicians from his youth, and from the original Jazz Epistles band — superstar trumpeter Hugh Masekela — to reimagine music for his Ekaya Chamber Ensemble. This music was almost lost forever -- only 500 copies were made in 1959, buried, and rediscovered decades later after the tyranny of apartheid. These giants of South African jazz tell their story at this extremely rare concert at The Town Hall in New York City.

Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College continues its 2016-17 season with the much-anticipated return of Step Afrika! on Saturday, 1 April 2017 at 8:00 pm. Holding the distinction of the first professional company in the world dedicated to the art of stepping, the company will conduct a three-day residency that includes not only a public performance but also a free after-school stepping masterclass on Thursday, March 30 at 3:30 pm and three educational shows for schoolchildren.

President Zuma declares a Special Official Funeral for Mr Ahmed Kathrada

President Jacob Zuma has declared a Special Official Funeral for the late Rivonia Treason Trialist and stalwart of the liberation struggle for a free and democratic South Africa, Mr Ahmed Kathy” Kathrada, who sadly passed away in hospital this morning.
"Uncle Kathy" was tried and sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben Island prison along former President Nelson Mandela and Mr Walter Sisulu. He was one of the longest serving political prisoners in the country.
The African National Congress bestowed its highest honour, Isithwalandwe/Seaparankoe on Mr Kathrada in 1992 for his selfless dedication to the struggle for a free democratic non-racial and non-sexist South Africa.
The President has instructed that the National Flag fly at half-mast at every station in the country from today, 28 March until the evening of the official memorial service.
President Zuma sends his deepest condolences to his wife, former minister of Public Enterprises Ms Barbara Hogan, the Kathrada family and his political home, the African National Congress, which Uncle Kathy served selflessly throughout his adult life.
The family has requested a private funeral ceremony and the details will be announced by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.
An official memorial service will be organized and the details will be announced in due course.
Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the send-off of the much-loved stalwart within government.

The Ukes and Kids songwriting project gives kids in South Africa the opportunity to meet, collaborate, create, play music, write songs and learn from each other and a host of local and international volunteer performing artists, educators, and mentors.
On Saturday, March 25, 7:30pm, Ukes and Kids in collaboration with Jalopy Theatre present the album release of “THE JOURNEY” – an audio diary with music and songs chronicling the journey of the kids’ relationship to music, what they want to do as they grow up, how music has changed their lives and how they hope music can be an agent for social change. The evening features performances by Robbi Kumalo, Abraham Mennen and Zwelahke-Duma Bell Le Pere, The Ukuladies, and Timbila. Also part of the evening will be light fare from the South African restaurant, Madiba, and an open marketplace with South African goods for sale by Art Aids Art.

Internationally, the 21st of March is observed annually as the ”International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination”. The democratic South African government declared March 21 as national Human Rights Day to commemorate and honor those who fought for our liberation and the rights we enjoy today. Among those who fought relentlessly for the freedom we enjoy today, the longest serving president in the history of the ruling party, was Oliver Reginald Kaizana Tambo. It is almost incomprehensible to imagine the freedom enjoyed today without the efforts OR Tambo made from years ago.
