Exhibit: Kgalalelo Gaitate: "Timeless Identity: The Cultural Affinity"

Friday, 14 November 2014
5:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Kalahari Gallery
1103 Fulton St, New York, NY 11238
Tel: (718) 908-8775

A native of Johannesburg, Gaitate’s passions are embedded within the fashions of the world. From the tender age of 3, Gaitate was rooted with a creative nature encouraged by her parents and crèche teachers. Self-taught, she drew inspiration from cartoons, coloring books, magazines and actual people. Eventually she began honing her skill at the National School of the Arts High School in South Africa. Possessing an incredible eye for detail, Gaitate works through the braided mediums of pen, oil pastels, and acrylic, depicting South African natives in traditional attire. Seemingly decorative, once taken out of their original context and presented to an audience in the western hemisphere, her works offer a palate of potential for cross cultural dialogues and new meanings to take place.

South African Project Book Investment Opportunities

The Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission (PICC) was established in 2011 to develop a plan for the future development of infrastructure in the country. The National Infrastructure Plan was developed, with 18 Strategic Integrated Projects (SIPs) identified. These SIPs cover infrastructure needs in specific geographical areas, or focus on the development of a specific type of infrastructure across the whole country.

Major public infrastructure projects to the value of USD360 billion for implementation up to 2023 are under consideration. 79% of this value is in the electricity generation and transport sectors. Projects at the conceptual, pre-feasibility and feasibility stages represent 48% of the total in value terms.

Apart from the direct investment expected to be generated by the infrastructure projects themselves, these investments will be used as a springboard for the redevelopment of South Africa’s industrial base. As such, prospects for the local production of inputs into these projects are being investigated which will provide a myriad of opportunities for private investors.  View full document (Acrobat).

Lira at SOBS

Wednesday, 25 June 2014
Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
Showtime 9:00 p.m.

Platinum-selling South African singer/model/actress Lira has already conquered South Africa and much of Europe with her irresistible blend of R & B, Jazz and African styles. Like Sade before her, she is now set to conquer America with the release of her debut U.S. single “Feel Good” and her debut U.S. album release Rise Again on Shanachie Entertainment. “Feel Good” is a slinky, jazzy re-mix of one of her major South African hits, a perfect showcase for Lira’s soulful, melodious singing style. That unique style led Essence  Magazine to name her as one of “Five Unique Artists To Change Music in 2012.”  With her debut U.S. tour slated to begin in May 2014, Lira is clearly poised for a major Stateside breakthrough.

Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola
Broadway & 60th Street, 5th Floor

With Hugh Masekela, trumpet, and Larry Willis, piano

Hugh Masekela and Larry Willis, two giants of the jazz world, come together for this show. Masekela is a world-renowned flugelhornist, trumpeter, bandleader, composer, singer, and defiant political voice. After coming under the tutelage of Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong, Masekela went on to carve out a five-decade-long (and counting) career, releasing over 40 solo albums. His 1986 anti-apartheid anthem “Bring Him Back Home (Nelson Mandela)” became a rallying call around the world for Mandela’s release from prison.  A pianist, Willis met Masekela when they were both students at the Manhattan School of Music some 50 years ago. Since then, Willis has performed or recorded with almost every great jazz musician of the modern era, including Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw, Cannonball and Nat Adderley, and Stan Getz. Don’t miss this rare chance to watch the two jazz legends (and dear friends) light up Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

Joined by associates from various stages of his career, he explores his fascination with American jazz and his deep roots in the Zulu folkloric strains that coalesced into the mbaqanga township dance band music of his homeland, from which he was exiled between 1960 and 1990. As is Masekela's custom, personal considerations will operate in the context of his ongoing quest to document, as he puts it, "the amazing diversity and unfathomable excellence of the African diaspora's cultural heritage."

Uhadi: All Stars of Johannesburg
featuring Sibongile Khumalo

3, 4, 5, 6 April 2014

New York, NY 10019

With Sibongile Khumalo, vocals; Feya Faku, trumpet; McCoy Mrubata, saxophones/music director; Paul Hanmer, piano; Herbie Tsoaeli, bass; and Justin Badenhorst, drums

“…a jaw-dropping classical masterclass in vocal dexterity from Khumalo.” - The Independent (London)

Uhadi, an all-star jazz band from Johannesburg, will set Dizzy’s alight with its joyful, high-energy brand of jazz, as it celebrates 20 years of democracy in South Africa and honors the life and work of the late Nelson Mandela. Joining them on stage is “South Africa’s first lady of song,” mezzo-soprano Sibongile Khumalo. A frequent collaborator with legendary trumpeter Hugh Masekela, Khumalo has established herself as a leading lady of opera, appearing at venues like Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, and the Barbican Centre. However, Khumalo’s range is far broader than opera, as demonstrated in her award winning albums, which traverse styles from African indigenous and choral music, to Western classical and jazz. Don’t miss the U.S. debut of this monumental collaboration.

At the outset, I want to thank all South Africans for your support, cooperation and encouragement. Ngiyabonga, ndia livhuwa, enkosi, ke a leboga....  Read full speech.

South African Airways Announces Resumption of
Non-stop Flights between Johannesburg and New York

Ft. Lauderdale, FL – January 29, 2014 - South African Airways (SAA), Africa’s most awarded airline, has announced that it is resuming its popular non-stop flights between Johannesburg, South Africa, and New York – JFK International Airport.  The non-stop flight will resume on March 9th, nearly three weeks ahead of its original schedule of March 28th.

While SAA’s New York-Johannesburg flight has continued to operate on a non-stop daily basis, the return flight has been temporarily making a 1-hr refuelling stop in Dakar, Senegal, due in part to lower travel demand during the winter months. The non-stop flight will be timed to arrive in New York in the early morning, allowing customers to quickly connect on flights to points throughout North America.

The nonstop flight schedule is as follows (all times are local):

  • Flight SA203 departs Johannesburg at 8:25 pm, arrives New York JFK at 6:40 am the next day
  • Flight SA204 departs New York JFK at 11:15 am, arrives Johannesburg at 8:00 am the next day

“We’re pleased to be able to resume the northbound non-stop flight ahead of schedule,” said Marc Cavaliere, executive vice president, North America for South African Airways. “Over the years, this service has become exceptionally popular, with our customers praising the combination of its schedule, the ease of connections both throughout the African continent and in the United States, as well as the unique South African hospitality on board.”

Customers with questions about the flight schedule or connecting flights should contact South African Airways’ North America Reservations Center at (800) 722-9675. For travel professionals, the new non-stop flight schedule is available for booking via the GDS.

For more information, call 1-800-722-9675, or visit www.flysaa.com.
