South Africa opens its biggest solar plant

The new 96 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic solar power project in South Africa's Northern Cape province is now online and will help the country meet its critical electricity needs.
The Jasper plant, near Kimberly, is the largest on the continent and can produce 180,000 megawatt-hours of energy a year for South African residents, enough to power up 80,000 homes.
The project was completed two months ahead of schedule and is fully operational, SolarReserve, the developer, announced on 11 November. Read full article.

A native of Johannesburg, Gaitate’s passions are embedded within the fashions of the world. From the tender age of 3, Gaitate was rooted with a creative nature encouraged by her parents and crèche teachers. Self-taught, she drew inspiration from cartoons, coloring books, magazines and actual people. Eventually she began honing her skill at the National School of the Arts High School in South Africa. Possessing an incredible eye for detail, Gaitate works through the braided mediums of pen, oil pastels, and acrylic, depicting South African natives in traditional attire. Seemingly decorative, once taken out of their original context and presented to an audience in the western hemisphere, her works offer a palate of potential for cross cultural dialogues and new meanings to take place.

South African Project Book Investment Opportunities
The Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission (PICC) was established in 2011 to develop a plan for the future development of infrastructure in the country. The National Infrastructure Plan was developed, with 18 Strategic Integrated Projects (SIPs) identified. These SIPs cover infrastructure needs in specific geographical areas, or focus on the development of a specific type of infrastructure across the whole country.
Major public infrastructure projects to the value of USD360 billion for implementation up to 2023 are under consideration. 79% of this value is in the electricity generation and transport sectors. Projects at the conceptual, pre-feasibility and feasibility stages represent 48% of the total in value terms.
Apart from the direct investment expected to be generated by the infrastructure projects themselves, these investments will be used as a springboard for the redevelopment of South Africa’s industrial base. To recognize companies, NGO's and individuals for their exemplary contributions to building a competitive, growing and inclusive South African economy, Brand South Africa and South Africa's diplomatic missions in the United States are launching the Siyabonga Awards at a gala dinner in New York on Tuesday, October 7.
Siyabonga is isiZulu for "thank you". Inaugurated on the 20th anniversary of South Africa's democracy, the awards express the nation's gratitude to its partners and friends in the US, including expatriates who are part of Brand South Africa's Global South Africans initiative, for their support in achieving the country's goals.
Defining those goals, South Africa's President Jacob Zuma recently told South Africa's diplomatic corps that promoting trade and investment must be their "apex" priority over the next five years. Read full story.

Lodox Systems, a South African X-ray system manufacturer is making its mark on the international medical scene with a low radiation dose X-ray system that takes a full-body scan in just 13 seconds. The scanner is presently in use in South African state hospitals, one private clinic in South Africa, two Forensic Pathology centers in Cape Town, and eight other countries, including America, Taiwan, Venezuela, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. The digital scanner was also featured in one of the episodes of the Amercian TV hospital drama series, “Grey’s Anatomy”.

Containers carrying South African Summer Citrus arrive in the Port of Houston. The pilot program of navel oranges in 2014 expands the entrance points of South African Summer Citrus to the US and enables faster and more efficient fulfillment to retailers in the mid- and far west regions of the US.
Houston, Texas – September 3, 2014 – South African Summer Citrus has expanded its arrival destinations with a pilot program to include the Port of Houston. A shipment of seven containers has been successfully received there and will be followed by another four containers scheduled to arrive on or around September 9th. Boeing, South African Airways to make jet fuel from tobacco

U.S. planemaker Boeing has teamed up with South African Airways to develop jet fuel from a tobacco plant as part of efforts to cut carbon emissions and promote green energy in Africa's most advanced economy.
The jet fuel will be made from a hybrid tobacco plant known as Solaris, which will be produced by alternative jet fuel maker SkyNRG, both companies said in a joint statement on Wednesday. Full story.

The R3-billion Jeffrey's Bay wind farm, located between the towns of Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp in South Africa's Eastern Cape province, was officially inaugurated last week.
Built by a consortium led by British company Globeleq, the 138 megawatt (MW) wind farm is one of Africa's biggest - larger than the 120 MW Ashegoda windfarm that was unveiled by Ethiopia in October 2013, though not as big as the Tarfaya wind farm in south-western Morocco, which started producing energy in April and will eventually generate up to 300 MW of electricity. South Africa was Africa's best foreign direct investment (FDI) performer in 2013, topping the charts for both inflows and outflows of FDI and leading the trend towards increasing intra-African investment, according to the UN Conference on Trade and Development's (Unctad's) latest World Investment Report.
The report, released on Tuesday, showed that FDI inflows to South Africa jumped from US$4.5-billion in 2012 to a record-high $8.1-billion in 2013, with investments in infrastructure being the main attraction. Read full story.

The remains of exiled writer and journalist Nat Nakasa are to be repatriated from the United States for reburial at his home in South Africa, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa announced during the annual Nat Nakasa Awards for Bravery in Journalism in Cape Town on Friday.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, I am proud to inform you that we have now obtained permission to exhume and repatriate Nat Nakasa's mortal remains back to home soil," Mthethwa said. A South African couple arrived in New York this weekend after crossing the Atlantic Ocean by rowing nearly 6,700 miles over six months, Corey Kilgannon of The New York Times reports.
Riaan Manser and Vasti Geldenhuys, an engaged couple from Cape Town, left Morocco on December 30 in a custom 22-foot rowboat. Their subsequent journey included 133 days on the water with no support boat and 74 consecutive days with no land in sight as they rowed all day and watched movies on a laptop at night. A blue diamond weighing a staggering 122.52 carats has been unearthed in South Africa - expected to be the most valuable ever found.
Petra Diamonds Ltd. said it had recovered the 'exceptional' gem at its Cullinan mine, on the outskirts of Pretoria, just months after it sold a 29.6 carat blue diamond from the same mine for more than £14 million ($25 million). Read full story.

An intergovernmental agreement to improve international tax compliance was signed by South Africa and the United States on Monday, 9 June 2014.
The agreement, which promotes transparency between South Africa and the U.S. on tax matters, was signed by Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene and U.S. ambassador to South Africa Patrick Gaspard.
It aims to realize the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, a U.S. federal law that aims to combat offshore tax evasion by encouraging transparency and obtaining information on accounts held by U.S. citizens in other countries. Read full story.

What was once a relative offshore backwater has become one of Africa's hot spots, with all available near-shore and frontier deepwater licenses taken up.

South Africa officially launched the first of 64 antennas that will make up the MeerKAT radio telescope, the country's precursor to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), at the SKA South Africa site outside Carnarvon in the Northern Cape on Thursday.

Ellen Kullman, DuPont chief executive officer, unveiled a newly expanded research facility in South Africa, the firm announced today.
The center, based in the South Africa town of Delmas, will serve as the central hub of the regional technology center, which is comprised of a network of of existing DuPont Pioneer and Pannar research facilities throughout Africa. Pioneer is DuPont's seed business, headquartered in Johnston, Iowa.

To celebrate his 75th birthday on April 4th, the legendary South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, composer, and lyricist Hugh Masekela presents a retrospective extravaganza. Joined by associates from various stages of his career, he explores his fascination with American jazz and his deep roots in the Zulu folkloric strains that coalesced into the mbaqanga township dance band music of his homeland, from which he was exiled between 1960 and 1990. As is Masekela's custom, personal considerations will operate in the context of his ongoing quest to document, as he puts it, "the amazing diversity and unfathomable excellence of the African diaspora's cultural heritage."

South Africa awards R50bn worth of rail contracts

State company Transnet awarded contracts totalling R50-billion to two Chinese and two North American companies to build 1,064 diesel and electric locomotives, as part of a seven-year, R300-billion expansion of South Africa's railways, ports and pipelines.
Together, this amounts to the biggest locomotive supply contract in South Africa's history, and the largest single infrastructure investment ever by a South African corporate. Read full story.

Qualified voters are reminded to submit VEC 10 online applications to IEC before midnight of 12 March 2014 (South Africa time).
Election day in South Africa as well as abroad was proclaimed in the Government Gazette on 25 February 2014. This also means that no further registrations will be entertained.
Voting abroad will take place on Wednesday, 30 April 2014 from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. By law it is not possible to vote abroad on any date other than 30 April 2014, and no exceptions will be made.
Applications are now open to notify the IEC of your intention to vote abroad and where (at which mission) citizens intend to vote, by completing a VEC 10 form at http://www.elections.org.za/content/For-Voters/Notify-the-IEC-of-your-intention-to-vote-outside-South-Africa-%28VEC-10%29/

A group of influential film executives from the United States are currently on a 10-day tour across South Africa, having been invited to explore possible set locations for movies and TV productions.
As part of their scouting expedition, leading executives from Disney, Paramount, Warner Bros and the Producers Guild will be traveling around the country until March 1, holding meetings with government representatives and industry players, as well as visiting local production houses and facilities, including a stop on the set of the new "Avengers" movie, scenes for which are currently being shot in Johannesburg. Despite the icy conditions, the pews of St. Paul the Apostle were full on Thursday night for a tribute concert in honor of Nelson Mandela. Recalling that Mandela's Dec. 10 funeral was also dampened by poor weather, DJ Gareth Cliff, who hosted the evening with actor Morgan Freeman, remarked, "It's almost as if, in his humility, Madiba doesn't like too much of a fuss being made." South African Airways Announces Resumption of
Non-stop Flights between Johannesburg and New York
Ft. Lauderdale, FL – January 29, 2014 - South African Airways (SAA), Africa’s most awarded airline, has announced that it is resuming its popular non-stop flights between Johannesburg, South Africa, and New York – JFK International Airport. The non-stop flight will resume on March 9th, nearly three weeks ahead of its original schedule of March 28th.
While SAA’s New York-Johannesburg flight has continued to operate on a non-stop daily basis, the return flight has been temporarily making a 1-hr refuelling stop in Dakar, Senegal, due in part to lower travel demand during the winter months. The non-stop flight will be timed to arrive in New York in the early morning, allowing customers to quickly connect on flights to points throughout North America.
The nonstop flight schedule is as follows (all times are local):
- Flight SA203 departs Johannesburg at 8:25 pm, arrives New York JFK at 6:40 am the next day
- Flight SA204 departs New York JFK at 11:15 am, arrives Johannesburg at 8:00 am the next day

South Africa: Record Year for South African Wine Exports

A registered voter in the RSA is NOT required to re-register to vote abroad. Importantly, if a registered voter intends to vote outside of the RSA, that person will need to complete an online VEC 10 form (which will be available on www.elections.org.za) once the President of the RSA proclaims the date of the 2014 elections and within 15 days from the proclamation date. The Electoral Amendment Act 2013 states that RSA citizens may apply in person to register to vote, and to vote from RSA Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates. The law does not provide for such opportunities outside of these locations.
The Electoral Amendment Act 2013 makes provision for voters abroad to vote in the national election only, and not provincial elections.
Eligibility to Register:
To be eligible to register abroad, a person must:
- Be a South African citizen;
- Be 16 years of age or older;
- Possess a valid green bar-coded identity document, a valid Temporary Identity Certificate (valid for 2 months) or Smart Card;
- Possess a valid South African passport and
- Submit in person the application form, the identity document and a valid South African passport to a Special Registration Officer appointed by the Commission for that purpose.

Mayweather Jr. to Visit South Africa

Forget world's best fighter, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was rated by the South African government as the world's greatest athlete and backed him to turn around boxing in the country.
The sports ministry announced Mayweather will arrive on Wednesday , 15 January 2014 for a near-weeklong visit — his first to Africa and a triumph for the country which finally got its man after trying to lure the 36-year-old superstar as guest of honor at the national sports awards last year.
The Ministry of Sport and Recreation also said on Tuesday that the boxer nicknamed "Money" had not been paid any fee to come. Read full story.
South Africa's First Smartphone to Hit Shelves in 2014

JOHANNESBURG — Smartphones are growing in popularity in South Africa, but their expense and the cost of contracts have meant only a fraction of the population can afford them.
One South African plans to change that by introducing the first indigenously designed and manufactured smart phone, aimed at attracting lower middle class consumers.
South Africans love their mobile phones. According to a recent Afrobarometer report, 93 percent of South Africans have one.
But 80 percent of these phones are feature phones, simple handsets with a number keypad, which can be used to dial numbers and send text messages. Read full article.
