Mention African song and most Americans think of South African practitioners of the vocal arts – Solomon Lindy, Miriam Makeba, and perhaps more than anyone else in recent memory, the vocal ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo. In a career that has spanned nearly 30 years, the group has recorded 40 albums and sold over six million records. First brought to the attention of an international audience through Paul Simon's Graceland recording, Mambazo's first US album Shaka Zulu (1987) won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album. Since then, the group has been nominated for a Grammy eight additional times, winning its third award in 2009 and receiving its latest nomination for 2011's Song From a Zulu Farm.

Black Mambazo represents the traditional culture of South Africa. The group is regarded as South Africa's cultural emissary at home and around the world. In 1993, at Nelson Mandela's request, Mambazo accompanied the future Present and then-President of South Africa, F.W. de Klerk, to the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo, Norway. Mambazo sang again as President Mandela's inauguration in May of 1994. The group is a national treasure of the new South Africa, in part because it embodies the traditions suppressed in the old South Africa. Mambazo's current and future tours continue to spread the word of leader Joseph Shabalala's dream of preservation through education while encouraging all those who can to give their support.

Mambazo has recorded with numerous artists from around the world, including Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Ben Harper, and George Clinton. The group's film work includes a featured appearance in Michael Jackson's video Moonwalker and Spike Lee's Do It A Cappella. Mambazo has also provided the soundtrack material for the films Coming to America (1988), A Dry White Season (1989), Cry The Beloved Country (1995), The Lion King Part II (1998), and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003). Time does not seem to be slowing down Ladysmith Black Mambazo as it continues to travel the world, meeting new friends, reaching new audiences, and spreading its message of Peace, Love, and Harmony.

President Jacob Zuma's State of the Nation Address

President Jacob Zuma will present the State of the Nation Address (SoNA) to a joint sitting of Parliament at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, 14 February 2013.

In the State of the Nation Address, President Zuma looks back at achievements of the past year.  The President addresses the nation in his capacity as Head of State, not only as Head of Government.

SoNA is an opportunity for the President to take stock of the country’s domestic and foreign situation and to chart a common direction that we should take to enhance our efforts to achieve a better life for all.

During his speech, the President talks about government’s achievements of the past year and looks to the future by presenting a programme for the coming year, called the Programme of Action (PoA). The PoA sets out government’s plans to address various key government programmes.

United Colors Of Fashion and Rain Present “Hope Beyond Horizons” in NY New York, NY (February 1, 2013) Fashion philanthropy organization, United Colors Of Fashion (UCOF) is due to present an Avant-garde exhibition commencing on 14 February from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, extending until 2 March 2013, at Rain NYC, located at 59 West 49th Street at Rockefeller Center.

United Colors Of Fashion, a 501 (C)(3) organization, which Vigore magazine calls an “epidemic of hope,” runs a fashion education program in New York City. The program engages under-resourced youth with opportunities in fashion and exposes them to the fashion industry in its true form. This program is unique in that it is the only one in the United States that is offered to interns free of charge. In addition, the organization heavily provides financial assistance to children with HIV/AIDS in Soweto, Johannesburg in South Africa.

“Hope Beyond Horizons,” “the name given to this exhibition, alludes the parallel hope and passion of aspiring artist, and that of those fighting for their lives in Soweto. A horizon is the depth as far as what the human eye can visually encompass, but UCOF offers exceeding hope beyond these limitations by providing individuals with inconceivable opportunities,” states, Michael A. Narain, UCOF’s Director of Creative Media.

Rain Africa creates handmade beauty products and hand crafted home ware with the utmost attention to detail, using natural ingredients with African origin. The company is passionate about providing employment opportunities for the local community, and in doing so help provide skills, opportunities and hope to many in Southern Africa.

“The exhibition at Rain is extremely meaningful to us. We are offering faith and a better future to those who often appear hopeless. Our programs turn dreams into reality for the people we service,” says Ciano Clerjuste, Founding Partner, Chairman and President of UCOF.

“Hope Beyond Horizons” is where high fashion liaises nature. The exhibition will consist of couture looks made out of organic foliage and accessorized by natural products from Rain.

Artist elements of color selection will be that resonating UCOF’s iconic burnt-orange, which is symbolic of warmth and happiness and emotional strength, hope, Hope Beyond Horizons.

For this year's Awards Gala, Shared Interest will honor award-winning singer, actor and activist Harry Belafonte, South African pop band Freshlyground, and freedom fighter and social justice activist Father Michael Lapsley.  JP Morgan will receive the Corporate Award for its work in South Africa.

Several top level athletics stars from South Africa, including Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, Lehann Fourie, Sunette Viljoen and Wayde Van Niekerk, are expected to appear in the upcoming Adidas Grand Prix athletics meeting here in New York City on 25 May 2013.

These South African stars are scheduled to compete at Icahn Stadium, Randall's Island, along with international athletes representing over 30 countries.

Among other superstars slated to compete are Jenn Suhr, Tyson Gay and Aries Merritt of the United States, David Rudisha of Kenya and Jamaica's Veronica Campbell-Brown.

African Continental and South African National Record holder, Lehann Fourie will be competing in a world class field in the 110 Meter Hurdles including World Record holder Aries Merritt and David Oliver of the United States.

Thokoza in I Sing For Freedom

All performances are at 7:00 pm.  All tickets are $20.00.  The performance is 70 minutes long with no intermission.

Five women, all South African and African American with an average age of 62 and a total of over 130 years of singing experience among them, will sing acapella, the music they love most and has made them feel most free.  This is a concert experience mixed with the stories of their life experiences.

Thokoza, which means CELEBRATION in Zulu, is conceived and directed by actress Thuli Dumakude, born in Lamontville, Durban in 1949.  Thuli acted internationally in plays such as Rafiki, Poppie Nongena, and Bongi to name a few. She played KaMadonsela (Lady Macbeth) in Welcome Msomi’s Umabatha in South Africa and abroad, and featured as a soloist in the movies Cry Freedom, Power of One and Serengeti for Imax Theatre.  On Broadway in NYC Thuli was the vocal coach for Sarafina and Sheila’s Day.  Currently Thuli is working with 20 rural women in the village of Galibasi in Muden (KZN) doing beadwork. Part of the proceeds from the international sales of the beadwork will go to AIDS organizations in South Africa.

This not-to-be-forgotten music and story-telling experience is presented by Eric Krebs in association with Baruch Performing Arts Center at Baruch College, entrance and box office on East 25th Street between Lexington & 3rd Avenues.  The Box Office can be reached at (646) 312-5073 or by email at PerformingArtsCenter@baruch.cuny.edu.

The legendary South African choral group, still led by its indomitable founder Joseph Shabalala, first won international fame through its work on Paul Simon’s 1986 album, Graceland, but the group has been active for more than half a century. Today they are the living embodiment of Zulu song, and a mobile academy of South African culture. “It isn’t merely the grace and power of their dancing or the beauty of their singing that rivets the attention, but the sheer joy and love that emanates from their being.” (Paul Simon) With the soulful singer and guitarist AURELIO MARTÍNEZ, the standard bearer of Garifuna music and the first black member of Honduras’ National Congress.

On 18 July, Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday, a coalition of Boston‐based community organizations, elected officials, and activists will host a celebration of Mandela’s life at the Old South Church at 645 Boylston Street in Copley Square at 5:30 PM. The celebration includes special guest speakers Governor Deval Patrick and a US South African Embassy representative among others, Mandela’s inspirational words read by local youth, and musical tributes. Father Michael Lapsley's presentation at Rockefeller Foundation

The Institute for Healing of Memories was founded in 1998.  It grew out of the Chaplaincy Project of the Trauma Center for Victoms of Violence and Torture where Father Michael Lapsley SSM (right) was one of the founder members.  Father Michael had lost both hands and an eye in a letter bomb attack in Zimbabwe in 1990.  Accompanied by prayers, love and support from around the world, he began the journey from victim to survivor to victor.  The Institute for Healing of Memories seeks to accompany other people on their journeys to healing and wholeness.

New York, NY – MAPP International Productions, a New York City-based performing arts producing organization, will celebrate the cultural exchange between South Africa and the United States with Johannesburg-New York City: The 2013 MAPP Benefit, which follows the opening night of Gregory Maqoma’s Exit/Exist on November 1st, 2013.  The Honorary Chairs for the evening are South African Consul General in New York, Mr. George Monyemangene and Mrs. Louise Monyemangene. 

Gregory Maqoma is a celebrated South African choreographer who is making his New York City debut after years of touring Europe, South America and the United States.  Exit/Exist reframes the narrative of Gregory’s ancestor, Chief Maqoma, from one of troublesome insubordination to one of heroic self-preservation.   Featuring vocal quartet Compete and guitarist Giuliano Modarelli, Exit/Exist is presented by 651ARTS and will play November 1-2 at LIU-Brooklyn’s Kumble Theatre located at 1 University Plaza between Dekalb Avenue and Willoughby Street . Tickets are $25; $20 for students and seniors and are available through the Kumble Theatre Box Office (www.kumbletheater.org).
