The name Kirstenbosch resonates around the horticultural and gardening world as the home of a uniquely beautiful flora in a setting of unsurpassed beauty. Situated in the Cape Floral Kingdom at the southern tip of Africa, it is the flagship of South Africa's network of nine National Botanical Gardens. This richly illustrated lecture will describe the long history of botanical exploration in southern Africa, and the remarkable personalities and plants contributing to one of the world's true botanic treasures. Since its formal establishment in 1913, Kirstenbosch has had a major influence on biodiversity science and conservation across Africa, as well as received 33 gold medals in 38 years at the Chelsea Flower Show.

Emeritus Professor Brian J. Huntley is a world renowned conservation scientist with more than 45 years of research and management experience—and a key figure in post–Apartheid conservation across southern Africa. A former CEO of the South African National Biodiversity Institute and the National Botanical Institute, he now consults for the UN on global conservation projects, and most recently authored Kirstenbosch: The Most Beautiful Garden in Africa, a centenary celebration of the landmark garden.

Morgan Freeman and South African radio and TV personality Gareth Cliff will host this incredible evening, taking the audience through the life and times of Mr. Nelson Mandela.

Morgan Freeman will perform dramatic readings from the original transcripts of Mr. Mandela's letters, speeches, and personal writings. These readings will be accompanied by the world-famous Soweto Gospel Choir, who will fill the cathedral with songs that honor Mandela’s life and vision. This spectacular 24-person choir has performed with Bono, John Legend, Celine Dion, Robert Plant, and many others

Finally, President Bill Clinton will give a special tribute speech to Nelson Mandela and the work of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, celebrating Mr. Mandela's life and all that has been accomplished in South Africa in the twenty years since democracy was realized.

All proceeds benefit the Nelson Mandela Foundation's Center for Memory.

Hugh Masekela and Larry Willis, two giants of the jazz world, come together for this show. Masekela is a world-renowned flugelhornist, trumpeter, bandleader, composer, singer, and defiant political voice. After coming under the tutelage of Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong, Masekela went on to carve out a five-decade-long (and counting) career, releasing over 40 solo albums. His 1986 anti-apartheid anthem “Bring Him Back Home (Nelson Mandela)” became a rallying call around the world for Mandela’s release from prison.  A pianist, Willis met Masekela when they were both students at the Manhattan School of Music some 50 years ago. Since then, Willis has performed or recorded with almost every great jazz musician of the modern era, including Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw, Cannonball and Nat Adderley, and Stan Getz. Hugh Masekela: Celebrating 75 Years

To celebrate his 75th birthday on April 4th, the legendary South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, composer, and lyricist Hugh Masekela presents a retrospective extravaganza. Joined by associates from various stages of his career, he explores his fascination with American jazz and his deep roots in the Zulu folkloric strains that coalesced into the mbaqanga township dance band music of his homeland, from which he was exiled between 1960 and 1990. As is Masekela's custom, personal considerations will operate in the context of his ongoing quest to document, as he puts it, "the amazing diversity and unfathomable excellence of the African diaspora's cultural heritage."

On 26 April 2014, South Africa Partners celebrates South Africa's 20th Anniversary of free elections, South Africa Partners' 15th year of operations, and will honor two extradordinary South Africans with the Desmond Tutu Social Justice Award -- Justice Albie Sachs and Temba Maqubela.

Justice Albie Sachs is a retired Justice of the South African Constituitional Court.  His career in human rights activism began in 1955 and he went into exile in 1966.  While working as a law professor in Mozambqiue, in 1988 a bombe was placed in Justice Sach's car by South African security agents, resulting in the losse of his right arm and the sight of one eye.  After recovering from the bomb blast, Justice Sachs deveoted himself to preparations for a new democratic constitution for South Africa.  President Nelson Mandela appointed Justice Sachs to the newly established Constitutional Court where he served for 15 years, advancing and protecting the rights of all South Africans.

Temba Maqubela was arrested by South African police for anti-apartheid activity when he was 17 years old.  He went into exile to complete his education n Nigeria and then lived in Botswana where he and his wife, Vuyelwa, were teachers.  When the South African secret police began to pursue exiles into Botswana in the min 1980s, Temba and his family relocated to New York City.  Temba later joinded the faculty at Phillips Academy, where he taught for 26 years and served as assistant head for academics and dean of faculty.  In July 2013 Temba became the eighth headmaster of Groton School.  Throughout his live, Temba has dedicated himself to social transformation through education.

Nathi “Black Coffee” Maphumulo was born in Durban, South Africa and studied Jazz music at the Natal Tech.  In 2003, Black Coffee was chosen as one of two South African participants in the Red Bull Music Academy catapulting him into the South African DJ scene. For the past decade, he's been proving his talent both as a DJ and producer, with hits like "Even Though," "Garden of Eden,""Juju," "Crazy" and of course, his international smash hit "Superman." Recently, Black Coffee has been busy with his own production project called “Africa Rising,” as well as racking up the awards, including two South African Music Awards, and an MTV Europe "Best World Wide Act" nomination. Black Coffee was even named GQ "Man Of The Year" in South Africa for his achievements in music and for the work is charity work.

DJ Spoko, born Marvin Ramalepe, was raised in the rural town of Tzaneen in northern South Africa, where he began producing on at age 12. For three years in the early 2000s DJ Spoko studied in the studio of Nozinja, the creator of the hyper-speed, hip-shaking Shangaan Electro style.  Spoko went on to build his own studio in Atteridgeville, where he produced numerous full-length cassettes with names like ‘Grave Yard Session’ and ‘The All C’Ing I’. Following the success of his tapes Spoko’s Ghost Town EP was released on True Panther Sounds. In 2014 Spoko will release his debut album on Lit City Trax, a collaborative EP with DJ Mujava on True Panther as well as music from his new band, Fantasma!

From BBQ to Braai was created to promote a better understanding of South African wine through the braai, a casual outdoor gathering where fiends and family converge to cook meats and seafood over a charcoal fire. 2013 stops included Austin, Los Angeles and Brooklyn.  So far, the 2014 tour has made stops in New Orleans, Scottsdale, Key West, Asheville and Minneapolis.

WOSA has partnered with Edible Schoolyard NYC, which will be the beneficiary of a portion of all ticket sales of the New York City braai. Tickets include unlimited food and wine and are available for $35. All wines will be available for pre-order from Tribeca Wine Merchants.

Carnegie Hall salutes South Africa with a festival called UBUNTU: Music and Arts of South Africa. Roughly translating to mean "I am because you are," ubuntu is a philosophy from Southern Africa that emphasizes the importance of community, influencing recent moves of reconciliation and inclusion in South Africa that were fostered by the late Nelson Mandela. Dedicated to Mandela's legacy, Carnegie Hall's UBUNTU festival celebrates the many threads that make up South Africa's vibrant musical culture. Check out the Festival's Calendar of Events.

Simphiwe Dana is a South African Xhosa singer and songwriter, whose 2004 debut album was a worldwide phenomenon. With her unique combination of jazz, Afro-soul, rap and traditional music, she has been hailed as the "new Miriam Makeba."  Award-winning South African vocal group, The Soil, is known for a heavenly a-capella sound described as Kasi soul. Tumi Molekane is a socially conscious hip-hop artist and poet.   This concert is presented by the Apollo Theater and World Music Institute as a featured event of their popular Africa Now! The British Up series has been called one of the great documentary projects of all time: a group of people originally filmed at age seven and then every seven years thereafter to create a unique portrait of the social, cultural, and political history of a country. This fourth installment of the South African version, directed by Oscar-nominated Angus Gibson, captures a group of 28-year-olds who were first filmed as children living under Apartheid and whose lives reflect the complex layers of change their nation has undergone in the two decades since the regime’s fall.   More information and online tickets.

A native of Johannesburg, Gaitate’s passions are embedded within the fashions of the world. From the tender age of 3, Gaitate was rooted with a creative nature encouraged by her parents and crèche teachers. Self-taught, she drew inspiration from cartoons, coloring books, magazines and actual people. Eventually she began honing her skill at the National School of the Arts High School in South Africa. Possessing an incredible eye for detail, Gaitate works through the braided mediums of pen, oil pastels, and acrylic, depicting South African natives in traditional attire. Seemingly decorative, once taken out of their original context and presented to an audience in the western hemisphere, her works offer a palate of potential for cross cultural dialogues and new meanings to take place.
