The Ukes and Kids songwriting project gives kids in South Africa the opportunity to meet, collaborate, create, play music, write songs and learn from each other and a host of local and international volunteer performing artists, educators, and mentors.
On Saturday, March 25, 7:30pm, Ukes and Kids in collaboration with Jalopy Theatre present the album release of “THE JOURNEY” – an audio diary with music and songs chronicling the journey of the kids’ relationship to music, what they want to do as they grow up, how music has changed their lives and how they hope music can be an agent for social change. The evening features performances by Robbi Kumalo, Abraham Mennen and Zwelahke-Duma Bell Le Pere, The Ukuladies, and Timbila. Also part of the evening will be light fare from the South African restaurant, Madiba, and an open marketplace with South African goods for sale by Art Aids Art.

Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College continues its 2016-17 season with the much-anticipated return of Step Afrika! on Saturday, 1 April 2017 at 8:00 pm. Holding the distinction of the first professional company in the world dedicated to the art of stepping, the company will conduct a three-day residency that includes not only a public performance but also a free after-school stepping masterclass on Thursday, March 30 at 3:30 pm and three educational shows for schoolchildren.

Legends of South African music reunite for a historic concert to tell the story of The Jazz Epistles, arguably the most important jazz album ever recorded in its country’s history. Abdullah Ibrahim welcomes special guest musicians from his youth, and from the original Jazz Epistles band — superstar trumpeter Hugh Masekela — to reimagine music for his Ekaya Chamber Ensemble. This music was almost lost forever -- only 500 copies were made in 1959, buried, and rediscovered decades later after the tyranny of apartheid. These giants of South African jazz tell their story at this extremely rare concert at The Town Hall in New York City.

In May, the New York African Film Festival returns to the Film Society of Lincoln Center, Maysles Cinema and Brooklyn Academy of Music for its 24th edition. A special program will take place at Lehman College on 10 May, in collaboration with the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment's One Book, One New York program.
This year, the flagship festival takes on the theme, The Peoples’ Revolution, to illuminate the swell of creatives throughout Africa and its diaspora seeking reform and taking the artistic and sociopolitical actions to do so.

Three strangers on a train traveling from the coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal to Johannesburg are bound by interlocking destinies. Kalushi is a true story about Solomon Mahlangu, a 19-year-old hawker from the streets of Mamelodi, a ghetto township outside Pretoria, South Africa. After being brutally beaten by police during the 1976 Soweto uprisings, he goes into exile and joins the liberation movement; a series of violent events lead Mahlangu on a journey that culminates in his being forced to stand trial for his life, using the courtroom as his final battlefield. A hero of the struggle against apartheid, Mahlangu would become an international icon of South Africa’s liberation.

On the morning of June 16, 1976, students gathered to protest the use of the Afrikaans language in schools. What started out as a planned peaceful march turned into a bloody confrontation with the police. The student protests spread to other parts of South Africa, causing an economic instability that rapidly plunged the country into crisis. Uprize! looks at the political, social, and cultural conditions that shaped the uprising, how those ideas we transformed into liberatory action, and how those actions helped shape the democratic society we live in today.

Daryne Joshua’s debut feature is a portrait of life on the mean streets of Cape Town’s lawless Cape Flats in the 1960s. Barely into their teens, Abraham and his three friends form a gang, more out of self-preservation than malice. As they grow up, Abraham (now played by the intense Dann-Jacques Mouton) and his gang turn to petty thievery. After he is arrested, Abraham’s storytelling abilities protect him from the worst that prison life has to offer. Once he’s out, he hopes to reunite with his childhood sweetheart and get his stories down on paper—if, that is, his gang friends and society give him a chance. Noem My Skollie is both a tribute to the human need for stories—and storytellers—and a realistic look at youth gang behavior.

On 16 September, South African Tourism and Citi Bike will host a Block Party in Tribeca, where Citi Bike riders can enjoy a taste of South Africa. Two dynamic dance companies, the Gumboots and Pantsula Dance, share the stage for a pulsating, rhythm-filled evening of urban street dance.
Stimela the Musical is loosely linked by an old man’s reminiscences of his days in the mines, to which many men were drawn from the townships, the dance routines and the songs tell of the miners back breaking work, their longing for home and the way in which their songs and dances eased the pain.
From the author and director of internationally acclaimed theater production, Spirit and Bones, Thapelo Motloung produces yet another masterpiece that must be seen at the Lehman Center.

Adapted from Mbongeni Ngema's Broadway production of Asinamali. On the prison yard, a man named Nelson Mandela told Msizi Dube "Go and do it for all of us, for all our people. So one day we may join you in a free South Africa." After Msizi Dube was released residents of Lamontville Township, with anger and passion in their hearts, demonstrated against proposed rent increases, and led the crowds with a cry of ASINAMALI - We have no money. Dube was later gunned down but his cause and mission had touched the hearts of millions who still believe and follow in what he said. Our story takes place, ten years later in a prison, where a group of inmates are asked to create and perform a stage play for the governor and his associates for a celebration at the prison. These seven inmates, crammed together in a small cell, use their free time at night, after a hard days work, creating the stage play as a way of escaping the reality of where they are.

CINEMATOSCAPE is proud to produce “The Space Between” stage play for United Solo in New York City. “The Space Between” is a coming of age story told through a historical and cross cultural lens. A young boy in South Africa longs to reunite with his American childhood sweetheart before the space between them separates them forever. Inspired by actual events, the play explores the universal themes of ‘distance' and ‘space'.
“The Space Between” play is written and performed by Simeon Taole, who has been called “an up and coming bona fide triple threat” (NOW Magazine) and one of the “best kept secrets within the arts and cultural scene” (North York Arts). Taole “proved himself to be an exceptional playwright, director, actor, filmmaker, and composer in less than an hour and half” (MOONEY ON THEATRE).
Taole has taken the show on tour 2016/17, and won “Best Performer” at the Atlantic Fringe Festival 2016. In review of this performance, THE COAST noted “I couldn’t take my eyes off Taole. He’s an astonishing actor; with small shifts in tone, accent and posture he can immediately create a whole new character”. Called a “Tour De Force Performance” (TWISI), this production also incorporates original music in a heartfelt and humorous show.
