Economic Developments in Africa with Focus on South Africa's Role

Dr. Dominick Salvatore gave a talk on economic development in Africa with a focus on South Africa's role to members of the South African community in New York City.

Dr. Dominick Salvatore is Distinguished Professor of Economics and the Director of the Ph.D. Program in Economics at Fordham University in New York City. He is Honorary Professor at the Shanghai Finance University, Hunan University and University of Pretoria; Visiting Professor at various universities, including University of Rome (2003-2012), American University in Cairo (2007), University of Pretoria (2009, 2012), Peking University (2009-2012), University of Trieste (1996-2002), and University of Vienna (1995-2003). Dr. Salvatore is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences and past Chairman of its Economics Section. He is also the past president of the North American Economic and Finance Association (NAEFA) and the International Trade and Finance Association (ITFA). He is a Consultant to the United Nations, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Economic Policy Institute, and several multinational corporations and global banks. He is the co-editor of the Journal of Policy Modeling and past co-editor of Open Economies Review and The American Economist, as well as past Editor of the Handbook Series in Economics, Greenwood Press. He has given more than 500 lectures around the world, was awarded the Achievement Award by the City of University of New York in 1997, and was nominated for the 2010 National Medal of Science awarded by the President of the United States.

Sport Star of the Year Award 2012

Olympic and Commonwealth Games champion, Chad le Clos, scooped the Sport Star of the Year award during the annual glittering South African Sport Awards held in Sandton on 3 November 2012. The 20-year-old Olympic gold medalist also pocketed R1 million and a brand new BMW from the awards ceremony, which was attended by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe. This award is decided by millions of sport-loving South Africans who vote for the sport person who they believe has excelled in their respective sporting codes or disciplines during the period. Andrew Govender, Mr. South Africa 2012, paid a courtesy visit to the South African Consulate General on Friday, 26 October 2012. Andrew won the title on 17 March 2012 at an action-filled crowning produced and directed by Mark West (also producer of Miss South Africa and Mr. World), choreographed by Ivor Jones.


Walmart, South Africa Citrus Growers celebrate benefits of export program

In celebration of a long-term relationship that brings delicious South African Citrus to U.S. consumers, Walmart has kicked off a week-long celebration of South Africa for consumers at Walmart stores throughout the northeast region. Walmart executives and leaders of South Africa’s Western Cape Citrus Producers Forum (WCCPF) hosted consumers to a “Taste of South Africa” on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the Walmart Supercenter in Levittown, PA.

The Kearsney College Choir has become synonymous with performance excellence, audience appeal and critical acclaim. With its signature blend of classical, pop and indigenous music, the choir has a growing international following with supporters from the USA, Asia, Europe and the rest of Africa. The choir boasts with a long list of accolades to its name, including 7 Gold medals and 6 Silver medals at the World Choir Games (the Olympics for Choirs) between 2000 and 2010. The choir was awarded the “Prize of the City of Vienna” at the 33rd International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna as well as 1st prizes in various international choral competitions in Hong Kong, Germany and Austria. The choir is in New York to participate in the new international choral celebration "The Rhythms of One World 2012".

2012 YMCA Global Teens Program Participants

YMCA Global Teens is a leadership development and service learning program that engages teenagers (ages 14-18 for overseas & ages 12-14 for domestic programs) in a year-long empowering international experience culminating with a 10 day to 2 1/2 week service abroad. This group will be travelling to South Africa in July 2012.


Ubuntu Education Fund's U.ME.WE NYC 2012 Gala

Ubuntu Education Fund hosted its U.ME.WE NYC 2012 Gala at Roseland Ballroom in New York City, drawing over 700 attendees and raising more than $1 million to benefit the children of the townships of Port Elizabeth, South Africa.  The funds will support the organization's new Early Childhood Development program and U.ME.WE campaign, which aims to raise $25 million over the next three years.  Attendees included South African Ambassador to the United Nations Baso Sangqu, South African Consul General George Monyemangene, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Donna Karan, Amandla Stenberg of The Hunger Games, Trudie Styler, Colin Cowie,Pharrell Williams, and Heather Thomson-Schindler. The evening included musical performances by blues guitarist Gary Clark Jr. and singer Alice Smith, as well as a live auction. "Our 2012 New York City gala proved that the spirit of ubuntu - I am because you are - is alive and well in NYC," said Jacob Lief, co-founder of Ubuntu Education Fund. "The evening reinforced our philosophy of community development: it is not about how many children we reach, but about how deeply we reach each child.  The gala launched our U.ME.WE campaign to put 2,000 more vulnerable children on their own pathway to success".  For more information on Ubuntu Education Fund, please visit www.ubuntufund.org.
