This South African Couple rowed 6,600 miles from Morocco to Manhattan

A South African couple arrived in New York this weekend after crossing the Atlantic Ocean by rowing nearly 6,700 miles over six months, Corey Kilgannon of The New York Times reports.

Riaan Manser and Vasti Geldenhuys, an engaged couple from Cape Town, left Morocco on December 30 in a custom 22-foot rowboat. Their subsequent journey included 133 days on the water with no support boat and 74 consecutive days with no land in sight as they rowed all day and watched movies on a laptop at night.  Read full story.

Consul General George Monyemangene hosted a farewell tea to bid farewell to Ms. Annette Badenhorst who has been Wines of South Africa -- North America's Marketing Manager for five successful years.  On the same occasion, the Consul General welcomed WOSA’s new Marketing Manager, Mr. Jim Clarke who will take over Ms. Badenhorst’s responsibilities by  mid-July 2014. Wines of South Africa is the official Export Council of the wines industry in South Africa with headquarters in Stellenbosch.

The International Executive Development Program (IEDP) with NYU Stern Executive Education was a combination of engaging faculty, group projects and company visits.  The program provided direct application to the participants' work engagements in the banking and microfinance sector in South Africa; it also exposed the participants to banking perspectives in various international banks.

Working Visit by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) opened on 1 January 2005, the result of the merging of the PE Technikon the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE) and the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University (Vista PE). This union of three very different institutions came about as a result of government’s countrywide restructuring of higher education – intended to deliver a more equitable and efficient system to meet the needs of South Africa in the 21st century.

NMMU brings together the best traditions of technikon and university education, and draws on more than a century of quality higher education, in a new kind of university that offers a wide range of academic, professional and technological programmes at varying entrance and exit levels.

2014 Order of the Companions of OR Tambo Awardee:
Prof. Thomas Karis

The Order of the Companions of OR Tambo is awarded to foreigners for their roles in promoting peace, co-operation and friendship towards South Africa. Among the recipients for 2014 is Prof. Thomas Karis, shown above, who wrote extensively on the history of South Africa's struggle for freedom and democracy. Prof. Karis is currently Senior Research Fellow at the Ralph Bunche Institute Graduate School at the City University of New York in White Plains, New York.

Mr. Dennis Goldberg

South African Denis Goldberg (center) was an activist during the struggle against Apartheid. He received a banning order In 1963 and along with Nelson Mandela, was one of the defendants in the 1964 Rivonia Trial whereby he was sentenced to life imprisonment.  He was released after 22 years in prison in 1985 and went into exile in London. Mr. Goldberg returned to South Africa in 2002.
